At the end of the previous scene Frank is with Wren, who has now disappeared
as he is introduced to a machine that, like hikuli, can help him to fly. The
biplane "emerg[es] from the resolute blankness of history" and its status in
local history is given later: the indigenous population can somehow
recognise something they haven't seen before, and we're given another
fast-forward, "events for years to come [seen] as occurring before or after
the airplane came". Cf the "heavenwide blast of light" that opens Ch55 on
779. Cf also the opening to Ch9 on 97, the response to "man-made lightning":
"For years after, there were tales told ..." etc.
Here, at the outset, all ("[e]verybody") are united in their response,
"look[ing] up". Frank's bewilderment is at odds with the Tarahumares'
'knowledge'. Any discussion he might have, with Wren or anyone else, remains
implicit.
