Once again, this has to be referring to the Partisan Review crowd and their crowd....
 
My bookselling mentor was a guy who was on the fringes of this crowd during his time in New York
and I can almost hear him saying this about Mary McCarthy's fiction.....Edmund Wilson's, etc.....
BTW, he scorned the NY set to me in ways I think of as I read TR......I do not know if he read it
but he would have resonated with it in many ways....................
 
And just looking at a library copy of a Mary McCarthy bio in which who is who in the fiction is identified...
(One good Google link lists all the major people in the crowd, if interested)........
