And, this reminds me that Louis Menand has a new essay on the state of
America's colleges in the New Yorker.
I get you, I just think that, and maybe I too am getting older, that
WG writes, well...not with the lucid simplicity of a Menand essay, but
with a foot on the platform. This is one reason I've been enjoying
this fat book of his so much. I've not experienced, what others
complain of, any let down or need to cut out characters or Dickensian
padding. The work is beautifully composed. The rhizome biers piped in
from radio stations on invisible strings dangling from Jungian
underwears are largely unaware of this reader who prefers to read a
sentence I can't make out no more than twice before pissing on the
author's editor's grave and moving onward and downward into more
pressing problems about the state of my joy as I read myself reading.
