The epigraph by Raymond Lully is lifted from Jung's IP, p. 253 in a
chapter titled, 'The Idea of Redemption in Alchemy.' In this chapter
Jung presents alchemy as a mirror image of Christianity. In
Christianity the goal is the redemption of man. For alchemy the goal
is the redemption of matter. The central image for Christianity is
Christ. For alchemy; the lapis. Jung quotes Lully as the earliest
known reference to a connection between Christ and lapis. The chapter
refers to Goethe's Faust as the final summit of alchemy and contrasts
it at length with Nietzsche's Zarathustra.
