Then in dealing with Austen, just prior to the period of his book,
he writes, "Neighbors in her novels and not the people actually living
near by. They are the people living a little less near by who in social
RECOGNITION [emphasis mine] can be visited.....
Then, later, in arguing how Dickens changed [had to] the form of the novel
as well as the subject matter (of living in cities), he speaks of Dickens
dealing with people not speaking or speaking past each other, "each
intent above all on defining through his words his own identity and reality"....
Bjut then as the action develops........relationships, connections are revealed
and "DEFINITE AND COMMITTING RECOGNITIONS AND AVOWALS ....are
forced into consciousness........THE NECESSARY RECOGNITIONS AND AVOWALS
OF ANY HUMAN SOCIETY [caps are mine]
He says this creation of the consciousness of recognitions and realtionships is
the
purpose of Dicnkens' best work.....
