And Raymond Williams maintains there is a crucial distinction
(in cultural history) between folk knowledge and ways and 
popular culture and ways........reminding me of Pynchon's
distinction in AtD bewteen the old Teutonic mythic depths
and the hated popular, contemporary--recent past included---
history of Germany..................
