well, there is the natural tendency of people to fete somebody who
does something good - and how can a person denigrate that without
being churlish?

so like you get somebody like I dunno, Christopher Wren or Leonardo or
whoever and you shower accolades and so forth
and then you might say that person could be called "better" at that
particular thing at that time anyway

but then you get somebody like Marie Antoinette and her court and the
decidedly un-simpatico French nobility, how could anybody think of
that crowd as anybody's betters? which was the whole point of the
French revolution, and although their solutions involved activities
that were thoroughly reprehensible, the rejection of all assumptions
of the superiority of hereditary nobility is something that I believe
right-thinking people approve of, in general, don't they?

the difference being that in the first case, it isn't so much that
they are "better" but that they did something good; whereas in the
second case it is very much about being "better", claiming the best
goodies, and enforcing that distinction with violence, which isn't
very nice

so I'm puzzled by the apparent hostility toward the populist attitudes
in Paris...and the focus on particularly unattractive behavior among
the hoi polloi
