GR translation: wheeling his bicycle

I only offer my own reading, without conviction, as a vote. I think I may be 
wrong on this more than I think I may
usually be wrong.....

I have always read it as walking the bike up the cliff otherwise mister 
seemingly perfect no wasted-word decider in GR (at least) TRP would
have written he was biking......or pedalling....or pedalling puffily (ugh)...

He is puffing because it IS a cliff he is walking up..............also, in most 
understandings of a cliff, not something usually biked..........

Yeah, wheeling means riding it. That's why he's puffing.
