There's a nice reversal here:

It says earlier the cliffs were uphill from "The White Visitation."

Le Froyd  must have had to expend some energy in his uphill walk from 
the hospital,  but he was able to descend very rapidly to the beach below,

the fishmonger's son's ascent from the beach to the highland was slow 
and laborious, but he had a nice coast  down to "The White Visitation" 
delivering the saphire.
