Since Burgess calls this his "personal" list, it doesn't have to meet
anyone else's standards. I've not read Faulkner's *The Mansion,* but
I doubt it would be considered his best work (*Light in August* would
be my selection). So maybe Burgess is consciously picking
lesser-known works of famous authors...
