another theory:
V. being Catholic does achieve motherhood and her time with Evan and
Demivolt was not spent making love. Therefore she and Stencil
conspire, and Stencil, being a member of the diplomatic corps in good
standing, communicates with V.'s father, whose banishment of V.
doesn't extend to her offspring.
Old Wren, then, raises Herbert in the dear old British Isles, where we
find him "helling about" in 1919 (or so Sidney imagines)
of course, there's no evidence at all for this in the text...is there?
