Faust. The legend of too much knowledge leading to damnation.
What happens to a 'bored scholar'..........
First time it has occurred to me that this legend has links to
the garden of Eden story.....
"Don't eat from that Tree [of the Knowledge of Good & Evil]
Was Eve bored on a lazy Sunday when she did and talked Adam into it too?
Whatever, but working those Pynchon connections, one of Pynchon's themes
has been characterized as Western science--certainly some science?--
out of control and damning the West, the world....
That one meaning of Against the Day, for an extreme example, is that 'the Day"
in History is another term
for the Enlightenment and the birth of modern science....
So, back to Faust.......I might start my hosting with that backdrop...........
Got my copy of The Recognitions---and Faust supplementary stuff....
What is Pretension for anyway, but to have a solid plister argue that to
shreds....
