Turtledove's a commercial sf writer with a few good ideas. He has done a lot
of novels about the consequences of the South winning the Civil War -- what
North America (and the world) would be like if this continent wound up with
two aggressive and antagonistic competitors. But he writes far too much, so
his ideas get diffused.
