Wyatt's divided psyche is illustrated by the palm reader's mention of
the contrast between his soft, gentle, understanding left hand and
rough, stubborn, willful right hand. The two hands working against
each other leaving him unhappy and alone. Esther's desire to redeem
him, to heal this split, is symbolized by her suggestion of a
mani-cure from which he retracts his hands, clutching. When using both
hands it is to tie knots in string, to roll the yolk (prima materia ->
anthropos) back and forth between them, to polarize them dropped empty
to his sides, to elevate them nervously, to protect privates from harm
in the darkness, to clutch his throat....tense, clutching, defensive
hands. The rough right hand of an iron will mentioned more than the
left. A right hand of incredulous tension holding a razor. Esther
blocks his right hand, scratches his right palm, he closes it on her
fingers. Later, with those hands before the dog, he extracts melody
from the dissonance. Enter the diamond carrying hands of Recktall
Brown. Initially folded quietly, ultimately heavy, grasping Wyatt by
the arms, imploring. And in the end, Esther's hand moves quickly, but
too late.
