Is it, do you think, dignity and respect that people seek under the rubric
"freedom?"?

I don't think many people would want to live completely free of authority.
You don't know what you might do.

Or what others might do to you.

In Pynchon's Vineland, the youth were afraid of freedom. Brock Vond's
secret insight.

Living alone, which is something I've had to do on occasion, provides a
gain in freedom of sorts which can be downright scary. what's to keep you
from turning into a complete slob? What if the roof leaks. Will you get it
fixed without someone nagging you about it ? I wouldn't and didn't.
