How the States Got their Shapes

I am listening to this now enjoyably and I am reminded of
how in Against the Day Pynchon lays out subtly his vision of
how the natural boundaries of "nations"--peoples-- have been lost in history.
How when created by States, so to speak, the artificial boundaries hurt,
damaged and destroyed..
