RIP James Hillman

I know nothing about any real relationship. But

Whatever "hang-ups' Pynchon may have had, or thought he had,--- perhaps a distinction without a difference,---
I have a hard time thnking, after Gravity's Rainbow and now we have  Against the Day, that he was treated
for delusions of grandeur. He didn't need treatment for that. Or, luckily, it failed.

And there is some great stuff to be read re Pynchon/Hillman in the archives:

"To realize that just because a V2 can ruin your day doesn't mean it is not metaphorical,
nor that it has origins outside the pale of the human imagination (or human psyche) and
its very structure and dynamics." (Keith McMullen)

Since Pynchon's blurbs are often about books by people he knows or knew, the question remains
whether he knew Hillman and, perhaps, was seeing him for therapeutic purposes during the mid
and late 1970s; the changes that obviously took place between Gravity's Rainbow and Vineland (its
dedication always sounded to me as if one could add "a-and for my therapist"), the downsizing from
rocket to pistol plus the more grounded reconfiguration of the us&  them theme, could - unless it's
just a sign of maturing by becoming older - be an expression of having transcended delusions of
grandeur. Does anybody know for sure about the nature of the Pynchon/Hillman relation?

Ruhe in Frieden, James Hillman!

(haven't seen or heard any obituary in the German media so far)
