It would be nice to think Lincoln was right: you can fool some of the 
people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but you can't 
fool all of the people all of the time.


But manipulation of the masses is an important fact of life, in the face 
of which societies aspiring to be democratic just have to muddle along 
somehow.

It's amazing things work even as well as they do.
