The culture of wall street doesn't exist. It's a lie. There is no such
thing. A wave, like the Vanities wave that broke over the street in
the 80s and was fictionalized by Wolfe was a real enough, and the
recent, post 9-11 wave of dark anxiety, an extreme or vanity of
vanities, that is, a zombie culture bereft of soul, teh death of
"God", for this is what the phrase actually means, a repudiation of
the sacred or even the secular spirit, is pervasive still. It is
haunting our city, not only wall street but Brooklyn and Queens and
the Bronx and Stanen Island, like those Santa Ana winds, described in
Joan Didion's famous Notebook or like the mud or fog, Dickensian and
Hard Boiled, it rises from that hole where nothing says everything.
