Today's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) has a literature supplement
and therein (p. L 2) Jürgen Kaube reviews Umberto Eco's new novel (Der
Friedhof in Prag). In order to represent Eco's artistic authority,
Kaube, certainly one of the more interesting German journalists, puts
him in a group with three other writers: Claude Simon, Hans Magnus
Enzensberger and --- Thomas Pynchon. While linking Pynchon to Eco is
common, the other two names are rarely mentioned in connection with our
author. What Kaube ascribes to these four authors is erudition and fantasy.
He says he's glad to live as a contemporary of them. And that he learns a
lot. Well, so this is nothing spectacular, yet still:
Kaube insists that it is necessary to compare apples to pears.
