  I think "convolutions of language" may well have reference to those 
actual folds (convolutions) of the cerebral cortex that process language.

Not a great meaning shifter but another example of Pynchon's habit of 
wiring technology (biological science) to human consciousness and 
unconsciousness.

The succeeding paragraph continues on in this same neurological 
vein--with Salvation itself (or lack thereof) being at issue.
