Yes, that sums it up exactly for me.  Cryptonomicon is entertaining, but it isn't literature.  It's not surprising that it's often (or always?) placed in the sci-fi, rather than literature section in book stores -- though it doesn't qualify as sci-fi either, in my opinion.  It's certainly written poorly enough to be sci-fi.
