without documenting it, although I might be able to (given leisure and the
notion that anybody might be even a little bit interested), I sense a
certain distance from the libertarian philosophy that animates some of the
protagonists on the part of the author.
Sure, there's a relish of guns and fighting and stuff, but it's played for
fun - I mean, 3 guys on a raft with a railgun?
similar instances abound...
REAMDE has a lot of soldiery thrillery stuff but it, like, sits atop the
Clancy/Jakes/Grisham tradition respectfully without being actually in it,
just as his notions on intellectual freedom and libertarianism and family
loyalties sit respectfully on the stack of Ron Paul Ayn Rand Milton Friedman
Christian Coalition, without actually breaking through and sinking - with a
bubble of eclat (like a fried batter) surrounding the putative slab of his
auctorial presence and keeping him afloat
Like, just to supply one concrete example: if he was trying to promulgate
contempt for the touchy-feely humanities, then why do the 9 ex-girlfriends
in REAMDE all demonstrate touchy
-feely humanities notions which prick Richard's conscience at opportune
moments?
