Yeah, the source novel was a straight-ahead Cold War thriller -- the wiki entry for Red Alert is interesting for showing how close the novel plot is to the later Fail-Safe. The author sued for plagiarism and won a settlement.

I think it was based on a "straight' no laughs story. Kubrick realized it was so 'horrific' he had to turn into a black comedy if memory serves
