This aspect of the Pynchon's fiction, that is, the refusal to tell
simply the narrative, and the style that refuses,  is its most
noteworthy feature and its most modernist feature as well.


Looking at the translation example we looked at recently, where the
tripple simile, embedded in a long compund-complex sentence, we can
see that the refusal, though an idea, is a style. That style is what
makes the text worthy of study; the ideas and structures are quite
ordinary and common in modernist works.
