God bless Levon, and Pierce for helping more people see why God surely did
and will.

Helm's _This Wheel's on Fire_ may be the best rock & roll memoir ever.

In my mind Pynchon's Arcadian passages -- the clan picnic at the end of
Vineland, every wave of green land up to "we'll go fishing" in M&D, Dally's
childhood travelogue in AtD -- all the fresh, green breasts of the new world
commensurate to our capacity for wonder -- are often accompanied by The Band
or by some of Robert Hunter's best Grateful Dead lyrics (Workingman's or
American Beauty). We screw it up every time, as the Band and the Dead and
Fitzgerald surely did, but one fine morning--
