Both are economists, professors, authors; but in this debate, there is
a huge difference in their roles because Ben is the Fed Chair and Krug
is just a journalist. In other words, Krug doesn't have a vote. He was
a useful gadfly, a liberal conscience or whatever, but he's become a
pest. Maybe he is right. Maybe, but a majority of Feds don't agree
with him. In fact, only one does. So, there is no tipping point here.
Krug is not going to change anyone's vote or change policy. And, his
statements recently, personal analysis of Ben--Ben is too shy or
whatever--is not very useful; he implies that Ben and the others are
puppets or lack guts or are duplicitious. So, Ben says one thing in
his academic papers and something else when he testifies before
congress. In other words, it's not simply a matter of inflation or Fed
mandates, it's a failure of the man, a moral failure. This is
journalism at its best, but not more than journalism.
