Remember in that precis of Cowart's book that went around here, wherein his opening
insight was to argue that for P, ALL the stuff in the world: nature, pop culture, science, math,
music, movies,--the whole mediated world too, etc., etc. was his subject matter---
this just occurred, W's "the world is all that
is the case"; does Cowart quote that?---so his satire, his ironies, his vision concerned EVERYTHING at once,
one after a multivarous another........................
Well, John Dewey, in trying to define pragmatism--pragmaticism [Pierce]---as an epistemological method,
cuts through lots of other philosophers' misleading notions [in his mind] such as whether we get knowledge
thru the senses, thru the mind (as abstraction).....we learn to recognize any dog--Plato's Form of dog, or a
kind of breed (perhaps at a distance) or one particular dog we know up close.....whether we know
Nature directly or don't know Nature at all if it is mediated.....and more, fill in...
By saying, that to a pragmatist we can "know" in all those ways...direct, mediated, a constructed machine
(by what it does but also as, say a "car'), sense impressions, etc.......
Or Knowledge is All the Cases We Know.....[me]
