In JK Galbraith's American Capitalism (rev Ed. 1956) , he writes of the incredible material success of the postwar (WW2) United States. that boom which many writers tackled as materially real but humanly sterile. Mailer, others, even a baseline in TRP's earliest now that I think on it.
anyway, Galbraith in his breadth of knowledge is able to single out the lower southern Appalachia Region of the US as the major area left behind In the boom. Within a decade, a major focus of " the other America" and where Cormac McCarthy set his powerful, brutal early novels.
