It's the Socratic ethic, really, dialectic is the highest human
manifestation of divine love. Those who toy with inquiry are the worst of
the worst. Thus Plato ranks the politicians as the lowest form of life, and
thus Socrates doesn't even pretend that a defense is much worth mounting
against politicians. There are rubrics of listening skills that are
sometimes fun, and rubrics of conversational levels from phatic to
dialectic. When an insincere listener meets a earnest conversationalist
things go awry.
