Reef here is like a guy in a Hemingway novel embodying Hem's meaning in many ways....
P pays homage to Hem? Yet also finds Reef's ways of being inadequate in the deepest ways/?

In this section Reef repeatedly overcomes all foes, threats to life.  He does it with grace.  Huge is a gentleman ninja.  Grace is in his body, his moves.  He iis not an accidental hero like Slothrup.
