 in Modernism: a Guide to European Literature 1890-1930, originally published in 1976,
Historian Alan Bullock has an essay entitled "The Double Image". For him it means that 
this period of history, AtD's period was full of life in the ordinary (esp if you had property and
wealth) while all the arts were attuned to all the changes and started then to feel and indicate
the world we lived in in the present (of 1976). 

"Despite periodic threats of war, strikes, suffragettes, fears of social conflict, the middle and upper classes 
of England and Western Europe enjoyed a freedom and security almost impossible to imagine today. 
No wonder so many..looking back, felt there was a grace [sic], an ease, a security living then which has
since been lost forever."
