"What Halfcourt felt, exactly [about her father and his emotional/erotic life], was, as it had always been, something
of a mystery to her."
 
True of most fathers in AtD, that is that their emotional lives are unknown even to their children? In most of P's work? 

A truth about one gender understanding the erotic reality of the other by extension? Other examples?
