Religion is in the background the way radiation is. I dunno if this came up during the reading or if it's in the wiki but the first World's Parliment of Religion was held during the Columbia Expo, from Sept 11 to 27 (really). What's more Weber visited the U.S and specifically the midwest about a decade later, at the time he was writing what became Protesant Ethic. It would seem to make religion and its essential element of belief more significant than inicially appears.
