With Webb and friends we get a picture of the clear universal exploitation of workers. Owners
& their manager surrogate stand-ins 
have all the power. The labor theory of value is mentioned and is almost the baseline
of understanding. (from the Marx and Ricardo original sense).

 Merle's itinerant life might show other aspects---Smith's---from this wikipedia article. 
Also, the 'creative destruction' of industries, another Marxist concept originally, always a hardship for workers who lose their simple
livelihood. And must start over against the next day's survival.
