I read it as a mildly humorous intensifier: his days were numbered and [just
in case you were wondering what range of number] few. But then, I grew up on
too much S.J. Perelman.

Q: a Redundancy, a tidbit of lax writing? When one says one's days were
'numbered', isn't few
sorta implied?
