half way thru Edward St. Aubyn's fictional life of Patrick Melrose. a
very dysfunctional modern British guy from a very fucked upper class
family which sounds run of the mill but Mr. St. Aubyn is quite the
writer, without the puzzles mind games and journeys to the university
library for obscure facts (though there is some of that), but with
simple and very rich human misery and despair. you can feel the sweat
and desperation of these characters, far from the workshopped typical
bland crap posing as modern fiction. thank god for that
