Yes, interesting. But reading on in the google books excerpt you linked
to suggests a tenous but interesting link to ATD, and Pynchon/Adams, in
general. That is, the abstraction of history and the suggestion that
historical events can be addressed mathematically. All the bogus math
and science presented in ATD seem at least partly correct, or, to be at
least partly based on mathematical "truth." Take The Integrator,
invented by Merle and Roswell (beginning page 1035...), an interesting
example of such bogosity, which allows the integration of the entire
present from a tiny sliver/snapshot of the past. But now reading from
the link you posted:
" Having adopted such an attitude about history, the show renders
absurd all discourses about war.... The very conceit that historical
events have no casual relationships with eachother [i.e., can be
"differentiated" from the continuum, and treated in isolation] can be
read in a different light as well. Historical contingency as an
organizing principle in Hogan's Heroes works along side a rescaling of
historical engagement. The result is the "little guy" theory of
history. Every time an episode claims the outcome of the war will turn
on the prisoners' ablilty to pull off a particular stunt, the show
suggests that history is not made in the halls of power but in the
sphere of influence occupied by common people. The outcome of the
episodes, and even the global historical events to which they claim to
be attached, hinges on the vicissitudes of a particular act or
interpersonal tie."
In contrast to Merle's and Roswell's "Integrator," Hollywood, or at
least the sitcom industry in this example, came up with the inverse
process: a way of going from the whole integrated present back to a
tiny differentiated snapshot of time in the past. Probably just as
bogus and, certainly just as prone to insidious historical "adjustment."

ok, i was doing a search on werner klemperer for reasons of my own
that i can't really recollect, and found...
http://books.google.com/books?id=iKUmSl00aGcC&pg=PT63&lpg=PT63&dq=werner+klemperer&source=bl&ots=KMGymEE9T2&sig=LHtP1vK1btjWsu4OnTwZK1epjbI&hl=en&sa=X&ei=qfEAUMvMCeOA2wX0wtGFCw&ved=0CDwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=werner%20klemperer&f=false
interesting because...
a) there's a whole book about the show - wow
b) wwii, nazis, tv - sort of a pynchon gestalt
