Paola, Kansas is named directly for the tribe. The tribal government was dissolved by the US in 1959 and the tribe, thus, disenfranchised. Paola Majistral is among the significant characters of V., which was written as the Peoria tribe had its hour of darkness, if you will--19 years of official non-existence. Just an interesting sort of tangent, a ghost ship that might have crossed within view of Pynchon's bow.
