Now, of course Bohrer is pretty cool and knows a lot about literature. 
But while there doubtlessly are many non-realistic elements in Pynchon's 
work - he's certainly not a social realist -, it's nevertheless not 
unproblematic to say implicitly that his literature has no 
society-diagnostical value. Does, for example, the Californian Trilogy 
not help to understand the cultural changes that took place from the 
1960s to the 1980s? For me it certainly does.
