There's also that great collection by the young suicide Breece Pancake. Don't know if it's still in print.

  Cheever, Collected Stories.

Alice -- there are a slew that are equally excellent but, if you want a title or two -- Open Secrets, The Moons of Jupiter, Friend of My Youth, Runaway.

Light in August is great, as is Absalom, Absalom. The Hamlet is a gem because it's very funny, not the first thing that comes to mind for many with Faulkner. The Snopeses -- Flem, Mink, Admiral Halsey, Montgomery Ward.

  OK.
But please, for the sake of life's brevity, tell us which Cheever, and which Alice?
Faulkner does no wrong. But (not short) Light in August is my favorite, so far.

Which is, of course, true. However, Everything That Rises Must Converge, is pretty terrific, as is any collection of Alice Munro's you care to peruse. And Collected Stories of John Cheever and Faulkner -- The Unvanquished. And, of course, Chekhov and Borges. And Kafka.

"Duh" because it's probably the best short story collection in English.

Let's list short story collections that are better, and why.
