Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, as he'd just learned from the happy
salespeople at Henry Holt that the bookseller was set to display at
least 20000 copies of that marvelous tome in stores ...

Naumann oversold and overprinted Mason & Dixon. B & N did not need near 20,000.
Where inside a sister company I learned of the move of the On-Sale date very late in the process---most unusual---
by two weeks---to have M & D land on the anniversary of Richard Farina's death.
