Slothrop can't figure Katje out.  (guys used to say that to girls--I 
can't figure you out) But anyway, things seem to him prearranged and 
mystifying. Why won't she show her face? The clothes closet with the 
carbon tet smell.  That old tetravalent bond. Does it mean the contents 
are synthetic or that the woolens haven't been properly dry cleaned. 
Does it have to do with the plastic shell Katje won't be mounted by? 
Does she want HIM to be less mechanical?  Is Katje breaking out of her 
assigned role with the pillows and the laughter? Is Slothrop becoming a 
little bit irresistible to her? She to him.

Confused.
