I am very good friends with a school administrator, and what many fail
to understand is that economic "sustainability" is a main concern for
any school, as it should be for any reasonable civilization: many fail
to realize money does not grow on trees. Division1 football teams not
only pay for many of their scholarships, but they are the finest means
of marketing a school, not only to alumni, but prospective students as
well. Game day Saturday during the Fall is big for many reasons:
bringing donors back to campus, reaching into their pockets and then
writing checks or forking over cash. As well, it has been noted in
many places that a teams success in the Final Four and increase wins
on the football field result in increased Freshman applicants. Sports
are not for "fun" or getting the student body "involved'.
Let's get real too. Currently, academic books or "voices" sell for
$50-$90 and our so trendy that they are undecipherable 10-20 years
later(see Zizek). All current university publications are so heavily
bent on ideology that their purpose in a library is quite limited,
unless it is mandatory for a class, and they grow obsolete. Yes,
spending money on a winning football or basketball team seams barbaric
and anti-intellectual, but it is the greatest means of marketing some
of these universities and providing a campus/alumni wide activity that
not just boost the esprit de core, if done wisely it can pay for
itself. I read a lot of what current intellectual such as Zizek and
other activists write, and consider their writings highly
anti-intellectual.
Yes. Pynchon sees us on the downward slope, and he adds a bit of humor
to it. It has nothing to do with Capitalism or Communism. It is
mostly predicated on our Modern, Western societal values.
