short story criteria yet extend and fulfill it......to remember, when you read Ulysses, where his observation
of Dublin life started......
Then Portrait to enter the mind of the artist, the deeper narcissism and personal themes that Ulysses fulfills....

If you were going to advise someone, no that you would excess airily, that was sposed to be necessarily but I like the autocorrect better... Anyway where would you tell someone to start with Joyce, Dubliners or Portrait of the Artist and why.
