Why no hardcovers?

Slightly unrelated note I found a First Edition (softcover) Copy of
Gravity's Rainbow for $6.00 at the local Half Price Books a couple of weeks
ago.... still rather blown away by that...
also I have hardcover M&D and AtD (both 1st eds),
dunno why they aren't as widely available these days, reckon they're just
so damn'd expensive...?
