If anything beyond fame, I think David Corn used them as contrasts

Subject: Conservative Cornellians

Referring to conservative Cornellians (Wolfowitz is a 1965 Cornell
graduate in mathematics), Corn showed his familiarity with university
alumni when he said: "I was accepted at Cornell and nearly attended.
Thank you for giving us both Thomas Pynchon and Ann Coulter."

Is this Corn calling Pynchon conservative ... or is the writer simply
assuming he is...

The ur-text isn't clear enough to provide an answer. "Referring to
conservative Cornellians" is a clumsy, ambiguous transition. My guess
is that David Corn intended "Thank you for giving us [alumni as
different as] Thomas Pynchon and Ann Coulter," and Segelken (the
Cornell Chronicle reporter) was too busy tracking the political
ping-pong to catch it
