Perhaps this is somewhat germane regarding both this issue & the thread on agnosticism and belief.

"...encouraging people to think analytically reduced their tendency to believe in God. " We should be quick to recogonise that some very astute and critical thinkers have maintained beliefs of some kind, Martin Buber and Karl Jaspers come to mind.
