Subject: Re: List of agnostics
I worship at the profane church of the American Narcissus.
Individualism, rugged and going into the west and away from it. The
Recognitions of the West made fragments and forgeries, in Adams, in
James, in Gaddis, in Pynchon, is a recognition of my faith.
The essence of my faith, the fear of Narcissus, is an Oedipal fear of
marriage and Passion (as detailed in Rougemont's _Love in the Western
World_,.
It is describes in P's Slow Learner essay. The American male is
afeared of settling down.
And in Leslie Fielder's _Love and Death in the American Novel_.
That is, I worship when I was a boy, a tomboy naturally, when I was
for ever young in my youth and when bewilderment was a blessing.
My bible, the American classics, are all boys' books.
