AtD showing vs. telling

This old lit crit cliche about showing not telling in fiction is
different (to me) when applied to novelists of ideas like TRP.
 
Yet, does any part apply, spar-like?
 
General question for any who are playing along: the narrator
speaks couple--three times of two qualities in the Western
sage in the first 400some pages. 
 
Fear....."fear was all around"  and 
 
Longing......
 
With Merle's longing for Erlys, Dally for her mom, the brothers
and Lake (ambivalently) for Webb.............I can feel some
of the longing theme........You?...............
 
Fear?............harder for me........You?
